Biodiversity is Essential to Security

Biodiversity is essential to Security... In a biodiverse food system, communities are better able to insure that the people can eat. The diversity of over 800 Native Varieties of corn, wild rice,taro, Seed Sovereignty - handful of rootssquash, and others ensure their long term viability, as well as provide food security for our peoples in times of drought, blight or natural disasters. World events like the Irish potato famine of the 1850’s have taught us all that bio-diversity is essential to healthy communities. Traditional foods are the centerpiece not only of our cultural practices, but also of our health. As our communities have succumbed to diabetes and other industrial food illnesses, we find that our traditional foods are the best medicines for our communities. The higher levels of amino acids and other nutritious essentials, combined with slow releasing carbohydrates and sugars allow us to heal from commodity, fast foods and industrial foods provided by this society. 

Our communities are coming together to insure that we have access to these foods for the generations yet to come!
