Our Traditional Foods

Our traditional foods are pre-petroleum...

drought and frost resistant.

They are from our ancestors, and they are our food security. The industrial food system has become more of a mono culture, stripping the essence of biodiversity down to “one crop” production. In a time of climate change and peak oil, this is increasingly dangerous.

production may require up to l0 calories of fossil fuels to produce one calorie of food and with a “monocrop”, using up to l5 % of US petroleum in its production and distribution. We also live in a climate challenged world -  we’ve already raised the temperature by one degree and at least one more is to be anticipated. Climate change means destabilization of major food and ecosystems. Many of our varieties are developed for micro climates, and were not planted with extensive industrial fertilizers or irrigation systems.  These traits will serve us well in the times ahead.
