We Oppose Genetic Modification of our Culture and Genealogies...

In our histories we understand that kalo is an older brother to the Native Hawaiians, that salt comes from the Great Salt Mother, that Manoomin was given to us as a gift by the Creator, that corn is our Mother. Seed Sovereignty - Native HawaiianOn a worldwide scale, genetically engineered crops are invading our ecosystems, with over two thirds of industrial corn grown in the US originating from GMO seeds. We have seen corporations and Universities move to genetically engineer our taro, salmon, wild rice and chilies. We continue to oppose genetic engineering of our ancestors.

Due to a strong resistance by Native Hawaiians and allies, Bill 361, which bans GMO coffee and taro for Hawaii County (the Big Island of Hawaii) was PASSED. Under the bill, it is now illegal to “test, propagate, cultivate, raise, plant, grow, introduce or release genetically engineered taro and coffee” in Hawaii County.

Similarly, Minnesota has passed a law requiring an environmental impact statement process on any proposed introduction of genetically engineered wild rice. We also know that there is no long term health or environmental impact study of genetically engineered crops, and continue to maintain our protection of our seeds, relatives and ecosystems for the seventh generation to come.
